HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Despite a stronger display of volleyball, the Orange Coast College Pirates still could not climb over the hump against rival Golden West on Wednesday, losing 30-26, 31-29, 31-29.
Jacqi Reed led the Pirates (14-5, 8-4 in Orange Empire Conference) with 12 kills, Deirdre Fiapai had a match-high 11 digs and setter Emily Lyon dished out 32 assists, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Rustlers (16-4, 9-3).
In the opening game, it looked like a repeat performance of the first meeting between the two schools (won by GWC (30-24, 30-17, 30-23) as the Rustlers jumped out to a 20-10 lead.
But the Pirates showed tremendous heart, overcoming a hostile GWC crowd to get within two at 26-24, before the Rustlers regrouped and pulled out the Game 1 win.
In Game 2, OCC carried that momentum and led most of the way. In fact, the Pirates were sitting on game point before the Rustlers found a way to escape.
In the third game, both teams went back and forth most of the way and again, it was OCC with an opportunity at game point. But once again, the Rustlers found enough gas in the tank to prevail and sent the Pirates home with a loss.
OCC returns to action on Friday at home against Riverside, beginning at 7 p.m.
