COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team picked up some strong play from several players to earn a three-game Orange Empire Conference sweep over Riverside on Friday, 30-25, 30-28, 30-25.
Jessica Roy (pictured right) played strong in the middle to lead the Pirates with 11 kills, while outside hitter Jacqi Reed (pictured below, left) added 10 kills and 17 digs.
Setter Emily Lyon spread the offense around with 34 assists, while libero Kayla Cutler matched Reed's dig total with 17.
After OCC controlled Game 1, the Pirates (15-5, 9-4 in OEC) used an 8-0 run late in Game 2 to take a 24-17 lead, forcing a Riverside timeout.
Whatever was said during the break worked for the Tigers (4-11, 2-9) as they went on a 10-3 run to even the game at 27.
But OCC responded in time with a Deirdre Fiapai kill, a Roy block and a Roy kill to highlight a 3-1 outburst to end the threat.
Again, Riverside gave the Pirates all they could handle in Game 3 and carried a 23-21 lead before OCC responded.
A pair of RCC errors, a Rebecca Lowe block and kills from Roy, Reed and Lowe sparked a match-ending 9-2 run for the Pirates.
OCC will wrap up the regular season at home against OEC kingpin Irvine Valley on Wednesday night, beginning at 7 p.m. That night, the Pirates will honor their sophomore class for their hard work and success at Coast.
