WALNUT -- An interesting decision to open their own tournament against one of the top teams in the state proved costly for the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties as the two-time defending state champions fell to Orange Coast 63-57 at the Mt. SAC Tip-Off Tournament on Friday. Courtney Ford led the sixth-ranked Pirates (2-0) with 18 points, while Katie Kissee shrugged off a cold shooting night against Palomar and added 17 points. Rachel Maulit chipped in eight points, while Sarah Schmidt and Simone Ibbotson each tossed in seven points in a balanced offensive display. Carmen Deal led the Mounties (0-1) with 19 points, while Jazlyn Davis, a third-team, all-state performer for Mt. SAC, was held to 10 points by the stingy OCC defense. The difference of the game came at the free-throw line, where the Pirates outscored the Mounties 18-9, despite taking the same number of attempts (21). With the win, OCC advances to the winner's bracket, where it will face Solano, which defeated Compton 68-50 earlier Friday night. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. at Mt. San Antonio College.
