COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team put the pedal to the medal early on and breezed past visiting El Camino, 77-39, on Wednesday night at the Peterson Gym.
Before anyone in the stands got their seats warm, the Pirates (10-1) jumped out to a 16-3 lead within the first 3 minutes of the game and never looked back.
Sophomore Courtney Ford sparked that early run with 10 of those 16 points and finished the game with 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Sarah Schmidt added 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds for Coast, while Casey Gomez added 12 points and Katie Kissee dropped in 10. Point guard Rachael Maulit led the team with nine assists and five steals.
El Camino (2-7) was led by Alisha Hill with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tiffany Cheng added 12 points as well.
OCC's lead grew to 41-16 at the half and swelled as high as 77-31 late in the second half.
The Pirates return to action on Friday at Cerritos, beginning at 7 p.m.
