Sunday, December 16, 2007

COSTA MESA -- Thanks to a relentless defense and timely offense from several players, the Orange Coast College women's basketball team branded Saddleback with its first loss of the season, 73-49, en route to claiming the 2007 Coast Christmas Classic title on Sunday at the Peterson Gym.

OCC (14-1), winners of 11 straight, trailed 30-29 with 6:50 left in the first half. By the time the Gauchos (9-1) reached the 40s on the scoreboard, there was 4:00 left in the game and in that 23-minute span, the Pirates outscored the Gauchos 39-12.

Tournament MVP Courtney Ford led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while all-tourney selection Brittany Taylor helped limit Saddleback's size advantage with a 12-point, eight-rebound performance. In fact, OCC out-rebounded the taller Gauchos 48-43.

Other solid contributors included all-tourney pick Rachael Maulit (nine points, five rebounds, seven assists, six steals), Casey Gomez (nine points, three rebounds, three steals) and Erin Barney (seven points, four rebounds).

Saddleback's Cassie Klockgether, an all-tourney selection and one of the top scorers in Orange County, was held to 10 points and committed six turnovers in limited action, due to early foul trouble.
