IRVINE -- An icy-cold night of shooting in the second half turned a close game into a blowout as the Orange Coast College men's basketball team lost its Orange Empire Conference opener to host Irvine Valley 72-39 on Wednesday night.
Trailing 32-26 at the half, the Pirates (4-14 overall, 0-1 in OEC) made just three of 21 shots in the second and shot just 22 percent for the game (12-of-54) -- a bad recipe against the state's third ranked team, the Lasers (17-2, 1-0).
IVC was led by 21 points and nine rebounds from Blake Wallace and 13 points and nine rebounds from Kashif Watson.
OCC's Brian Gee led the Pirates with 10 points. Shaun Engle added nine points and five rebounds, while Brian Hellmuth added six points and eight rebounds.
The Pirates return to action on Friday at home against Cypress, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
