White-hot Chargers zap Pirates, 97-72
Friday, January 11, 2008

COSTA MESA -- It may have been Orange Coast's home court, but it was the Cypress College men's basketball team who felt right at home early on in Friday's 97-72 conference win over the Pirates.

Cypress (10-11, 1-1 in Orange Empire Conference) hit baskets from everywhere in the first half, connecting on 18 of 28 shots (64.3 percent), including 7-of-11 from 3-point ranger (63.6 percent). That hot shooting helped the Chargers take a 55-34 lead at the half and never looked back.

OCC (4-15, 0-2) kept pushing forward and managed to cut the deficit down to 15 with 5:45 left, before the Chargers regrouped and ripped off 11 straight points to regain their 20-plus point lead.

Shaun Engle led the Pirates with 18 points and five rebounds, while Matthew Ching added 14 points and six rebounds. Vinnie Nasca came off the bench to score 10 points.

Cypress was led by Sean Starkey, who scored 25 points, including six 3-pointers. Khalif Boyd added 23 points, while Devon McDonald and Eric Butler each contributed 12 points.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at Fullerton, beginning at 5:30 p.m. They return to the Peterson Gym on Jan. 23 against Riverside, also at 5:30 p.m.
