COSTA MESA -- Another impressive night from Courtney Ford and strong defense from the entire Orange Coast squad enabled the Pirates to cruise to an 86-68 Orange Empire Conference win over the visiting Riverside Tigers on Monday night.
Ford led the Pirates (21-3, 5-1 in conference) with 23 points and 14 rebounds in just over 25 minutes of work. Brittany Taylor added 12 points, while Katie Kissee added 11 points. Point guard Rachael Maulit once again paced the offense with seven assists.
Just over five minutes into the game, the Pirates had things under control, jumping out to a 19-3 lead over the Tigers (9-14, 2-4). The lead grew to its peak at 61-27 with 16:10 left in the game before the game grinded to a halt and fouls, turnovers and free throws became the theme of the game for both sides.
OCC subs Niki Wakamiya and Lee Wang took advantage of the extra time and combined for 17 points on 15-of-17 shooting from the free-throw line.
Crystal Vasquez led Riverside with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Both teams combined for 60 turnovers, 68 free throws and 53 fouls.
The Pirates return to action on Wednesday at Santa Ana, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
