Men's Basketball: Helmuth, Pirates topple Santa Ana

SANTA ANA - Brian Hellmuth had 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Orange Coast College men's basketball team to a 79-69 Orange Empire Conference road win over Santa Ana on Wednesday.
The freshman forward was 9-of-14 from the field, 3-of-6 from 3-point land and a near-perfect 7-of-8 from the free-throw line for his 28 points. He also had a block, two steals and four assists for the Pirates (7-16, 2-4 in conference).
Matthew Ching hit 11-of-13 of his free throws for the majority of his 17 points, while Shaun Engle added seven points for Coast.
Trailing by five at the half, OCC found its offensive groove, outscoring Santa Ana (9-15, 1-5) 44-29 in the second half.
Tyre Thompson had 19 points for the Dons, while teammate Darrell Goodson added 10.
The Pirates return to action on Friday at home against Irvine Valley to begin the second round of OEC play. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
