Women's Tennis: Pirates prevail over Cerritos in opener

CERRITOS -- The Orange Coast College women's tennis team opened the 2008 season at Cerritos on Thursday and posted an 8-1 nonconference win over the Falcons.
In singles play, the match of the day came from the No. 1 spot as freshman Brittany Bass battled Cerritos' Annika You for every point. After losing the first set 6-7 (3), Bass rallied to win the second set 7-6 (5), then outlasted You 11-9 in the tiebreaker.
Another comeback win came from Emily Garcia, who dropped her first set to Tania Garcia 1-6, only to rally to win the sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Straight-set victories came from sophomore Brittnie Furuvald (7-5, 6-0), Evelyn Wallace (7-5, 6-1), Kalin Eshelman (6-0, 6-1) and Ashton Morris (6-1, 6-1).
In doubles, Wallace and Eshelman swept their way to an 8-0 win, while Morris and Garcia doubled up the Falcons, 8-4.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday at Rio Hondo before hosting Cuyamaca on Thursday. Both matches will begin at 2 p.m.
