Track and Field: Pirates open season strong at OEC Relays

COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College track team opened the 2008 season with several first-place marks and times at last week's Orange Empire Conference Relays, held at OCC.
 
On the men's side, OCC's 800-meter relay team of Brian Bennett, Chris Woods, Evan Campbell and Chris Pfeifer crossed the finish line with a winning time of 1 minute, 31.28 seconds.
 
In the men's discus, Andres Rossini dominated the field with a winning throw of 158 feet, 2 inches, more than 20 feet ahead of runner-up Austin Elmore of Riverside (138-0).
 
On the women's side, the Pirates were led by their distance medley team. The foursome of Jillian Lopez, Tiffany Hannah, Claire Fleming and Crystal Reed breezed past the competition for a winning time of 13:13.7, more than 17 seconds ahead of runner-up Fullerton's time of 13:30.24.
 
Another strong performance came from OCC's 400-meter shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Brenda Finney, Emily Martin, Emily Carr and Nikkita Rodgers, who placed first with a time of 1:07.35.

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday at Saddleback, beginning at 2 p.m.
