Track and field: Pirates take second at Saddleback double-dual meet

MISSION VIEJO -- The Orange Coast College men's and women's track teams placed second overall at the Saddleback double-dual meet, behind Cerritos and ahead of the host Gauchos.

On the men's side, the Pirates finished with 57 points, while Cerritos notched 92 points and Saddleback accumulated 53. On the women's side, OCC had 65, second to Cerritos' 111 points and ahead of the host Gauchos' 20 points.
 
For the OCC men, Scott Ruud notched a pair of wins, placing first in the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 3 1/4 inches and first in the hammer throw with a mark of 130-7.
 
In fact, it was a 1-2-3 finish for the Pirates in the shot put as Eric Grunbaum (41-7 3/4) placed second and Stephan Ruby (40-7 1/4) took third.
 
In the discus, Andres Rossini dominated the field with a winning throw of 165-7, which bettered the rest of the competitors by over 40 feet.
 
Rossini took second in the javelin (160-8), while Ruby (152-1) placed third.
 
On the track, Jason Quezada placed first in the 800-meter run with a winning time of 2 minutes, 3.07 seconds. Teammate Nick St. Andre took home first in the 5,000 with a time of 16:16.82.
 
In the 100, Brian Bennett took second with a time of 11.19, while two OCC relay teams, the 400 (44.14) and the 1,600 (3:39.73) placed second and third, respectively.

On the women's side, Crystal Reed placed first in a pair of events, winning the 800 (2:28.56) and the 1,500 (4:56.09).
 
Rachel Ronquillo led a 1-2-3 finish for the Pirates in the 400 with a victorious time of 1:06.38. Teammate Madison Empting (1:06.77) took second and Tracy Bjelland (1:07.09) finished third.
 
In the 3,000 steeplechase, Cassie Mitchell was the lone participant under 12 minutes, crossing the finish line at 11:48.0.
 
A busy day was had by Brianna Vanderwal, who finished third in the 100 hurdles (18.06), second the 400 hurdles (1:08.3), second in the high jump (4-10) and third in the javelin (95-0).
 
Other top-three finishes for the Pirates include Cassie Mitchell in the 800 (second, 2:30.67), Brenda Finney in the 100 hurdles (second, 16.76) and Danielle Morton in the long jump (third, 13-7 1/2) and triple jump (second, 31-1).
 
OCC's 400 relay team earned a second-place time of 54.0, while the 1,600 relay also crossed the finish line in second with a time of 4:26.17.
 
The Pirates return to the track on Friday at the Cerritos Invitational, beginning at 3 p.m.
