WALNUT -- With some of the state's top swimmers in attendance, the Orange Coast College men's and women's swim teams more than held their own at the 2008 Mt. San Antonio College Invitational this past weekend.
Ventura and Chaffey's men's and women's teams finished first and second, respectively, while Coast's teams placed third in both. On the men's side, OCC was led by sophomore standout Greg Hulse, who earned two first-place times and one third. He won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.84 seconds and the 100 free with a winning time of 47.8. Hulse's third-place time came in the 100 butterfly (53.02). A pair of OCC relay teams -- the 400 free (3:18) and the 200 medley (1:42.0) -- also earned first-place for the Pirates, who finished with a team total of 436 points. Joe Krone finished strong for the Pirates in the 100 backstroke, placing second overall with a time of 54.28. Another runner-up finish came from the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:34. For Elden Carpenter, fourth was the finish of the day as he accomplished that place in the standings in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.92), 200 breast (2:15.22) and the 400 individual medley (4:23.67). Other top-five finishes for the Pirates include the 200 free relay team (third, 1:29.0) and Aaron Hoff in the 200 backstroke (fifth, 2:05.91). On the women's side, the Pirates took home a pair of first-place times. Amy White touched the wall first in the 650 freestyle with a winning time of 19:14.77. OCC teammate Jamie Krispel joined White on the winner's platform, courtesy of a first-place time in the 100 individual medley (1:04.55). Krispel also finished fifth in the 50 butterfly (28.88) and the 50 breaststroke (33.22). Other top-five times for the Pirates (365 team points) were recorded by Tiffany Libman in the 50 freestyle (fifth, 25.91), Brittany Reece in the 650 freestyle (fifth, 20:04.96), and the OCC 200 freestyle relay team (fifth, 1:47.0).
