Swimming: OCC men, women finish third at Cuesta Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Another solid meet performance was turned in by the Orange Coast College men's and women's swim programs as they each finished third overall at last weekend's Cuesta College Invitational.
The OCC men finished with 428 points, while the Pirate women finished with 441.5 points. Santa Rosa placed first and Ventura finished second on the men's and women's side.
For the Coast men, Greg Hulse showed why he is one of the top sprint swimmers in the area by winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.83 seconds. He also placed fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.29.
Another first-place performance took place in the 200 backstroke as OCC's Joe Krone touched the wall first with a time of 1:56.88, after his fifth-place time of 48.21 in the 100 freestyle.
On the diving board, OCC took first in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Jonathen Franzen's 222.8 points in the 1-meter competition led the way, while Chris Malloy took the 3-meter dive with 230.85 points. Malloy placed third in the 1-meter event (217.1), while Franzen finished second in the 3-meter competition (217.65).
Four top-three finishes were turned in by OCC's relay teams, including the 400 free relay (2nd, 3:14.0), 200 medley relay (t-3rd, 1:41.0), 400 medley relay (3rd, 3:43.0) and the 200 free relay (1:27.0).
Top-five individual finishes were turned in by Kirk Pfotenhauer in the 500 freestyle (5th, 5:02.10) and Elden Carpenter in the 100 breaststroke (5th, 1:01.78).
On the women's side, it was another busy day for Jamie Krispel as she clocked in with three top-for times, including a first-place mark in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.84), a third-place time in the 50 butterfly (28.85) and a fourth-place time in the 100 individual medley (1:05.29).
Diver Nicki Burrelli topped the field in the 3-meter event with 214.60 points and was third in the 1-meter competition with 226.55 points.
Other top-five times for the Pirates include Amy White in the 500 free (2nd, 5:28.04), Tiffany Libman in the 50 free (2nd, 25.94) and 100 free (5th, 56.71), Ashlee Gray in the 50 breaststroke (3rd, 33.69), the 400 free relay (4th, 3:50.0), 800 free relay (4th, 8:28.0), the 400 medley relay (4th, 4:33.0) and 200 medley relay (5th, 2:01.0).
The Pirate swimmers will return to competition on Friday when they host Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference dual meet, beginning at 3 p.m.
