Track and Field: OCC tops Fullerton, falls to Riverside at tri-meet

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's and women's track teams each went 1-1 in their tri-meet with Fullerton and Riverside on Friday. Both teams defeated the Hornets, but came up short against the Tigers.
On the women's side, OCC defeated Fullerton 128-22, while Riverside edged the Pirates 80-74.
There was a pair of three-event winners of the OCC women as Brenda Finney and Crystal Reed each pulled off the trifecta.
Finney (pictured left) came through in the 100-meter hurdles with a winning time of 16.71 seconds. She then took first in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.69 and followed all that up with a first-place mark in the high jump at 4-feet, 9-inches.
Reed, OCC's state cross country champion from the fall, won the 800 (2:24.54), the 1,500 (4:54.64) and the 3,000 (10:13.41). Showing her stamina, Reed's 3,000 time (her third race of the day) was 26 seconds ahead of runner-up teammate Cassie Mitchell's time of 10:39.11.
It was a 1-2-3 finish in the 800 as Reed (pictured right) was followed close behind by teammates Mitchell (2:24.76) and Rachel Ronquillo (2:25.55).
Another 1-2-3 occurred in the 400 hurdles as Brianna Vanderwal (1:06.44) and Emily Martin (1:13.5) followed Finney across the finish line.
Other first-place performances for the Pirates came from the women's 1,600 relay (3:58.42) and Maryn Ciarelli in the shot put (35-0). Ciarelli's throw in the shot was over 2-feet, 3-inches better than Riverside's Brittney McGhee's second-place throw of 32-8 3/4).
On the men's side, OCC topped Fullerton 121-27, but lost to the standout Tigers, 117-32.
Field events were the highlights of the day for the Pirates as Scott Ruud, Stephan Ruby and Andrew Rossini each took first place in their respected events.
Ruud win the hammer throw with a mark of 140-2, Ruby placed first in the javelin throw (171-3) and Rossini dominated the competition in the discus (170-6).
The Pirates will return to action on Friday when they host the Coast Open Track and Field Classic, beginning at 1 p.m.
