RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College baseball team maintained its share of first place in the Orange Empire Conference with a 12-10 road win over defending state champion Riverside on Tuesday in OEC action.
The win keeps the Pirates (26-7-1, 10-1 in conference) atop the OEC standings with Santa Ana (25-8, 10-1). The Pirates and Dons will meet for a pair of crucial conference games, beginning on Thursday at OCC at 2:30 and at Santa Ana on Saturday at noon.
In the win over Riverside, the Pirates trailed 5-1 midway through the game before coming alive with a five-run fifth inning. OCC had six hits in the frame, including RBI singles by Kyle Muhlsteff, Brett Wallach and Chris Fung as well as a two-run double by Ryan Sheeks.
Riverside (22-10, 4-7) tied the game at 6 in the sixth before OCC responded with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and four runs in the top of the ninth to make it 12-6. The Pirates took advantage of a pair of RCC errors and a costly pair of passed balls in those two innings and scored five unearned runs in that span.
Riverside made things interesting in the ninth, scoring four runs and putting the tying runs on base, but Wallach hung on and posted his ninth save of the season.
Matt Hauser (pictured above) pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win and improve to 6-1. The sophomore righty allowed one unearned run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Offensively, stars for the Pirates were Sheeks (1-for-4, three RBI), Fung (3-for-5, one run, two RBI), Muhlsteff (2-for-5, two runs, one RBI), Wallach (2-for-5, one run, one RBI), Cory Olson (2-for-5, one run, two RBI) and Drew Hillman (3-for-5, one run).
