MISSION VIEJO -- The Orange Coast College women's tennis team showed exactly why the Orange Empire Conference title resides in Costa Mesa in the opening rounds of the OEC Individual Championships on Tuesday at Saddleback College.
Freshman Brittany Bass, seeded No. 1 in the event, earned a first-round bye before sweeping past Irvine Valley's Nedra Jenkins, 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 16.
Teammate Brittnie Furuvald was equally successful, posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over Saddleback's Casey Wood following her 6-1, 6-0 opening round win over Fullerton's Melissa Pyper.
Joining Bass and Furuvald in the quarterfinals will be sophomore Evelyn Wallace, who topped Katelin Villela of Fullerton in the opening round (6-1, 6-1), then topped Riverside's Vicky Andreade (6-1, 7-5) in the Round of 16.
Kalin Eshelman won her first-round match over Fullerton's Marina Hiskey, 6-1, 6-1, but lost to Riverside Caroline Houston, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 in the second round.
Emily Garcia and Jasmine Mathieson lost in the opening round of singles, but in doubles, they teamed up to advance to the second round with a 6-1, 6-3 win over IVC's Carly Chrum and Michelle LaVon.
Bass and Furuvald made quick work of IVC's Lindsey Baecker and Dana Bortz, 6-0, 6-0, while teammates Wallace and Eshelman topped Saddleback's Wood and Emma Hulse, 6-2, 6-0.
By advancing to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles all of the aforementioned Pirate winners have qualified for the Southern California Regionals, set for May 1 in Santa Barbara.
The OEC Individual Championships continue on Thursday and at Saddleback College.
