Swimming: Pirate divers highlight strong trip to State Finals

MISSION VIEJO -- While several Orange Coast College swimmers reached finals and competed well, it was the Pirate divers who returned home as state champions at the 2008 California Community Colleges Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships this past weekend at Saddleback College.
On the men's side, freshman Chris Malloy earned Male State Diver of the Year with his first-place performance in 1-meter diving with a championship score of 246.60. He also finished fourth in the 3-meter event with a score of 207.55.
Winning the 3-meter diving event was Pirate teammate Jonathan Franzen, who topped the field with a score of 253.05.
On the women's side, Nikki Burrelli earned Female Co-Diver of the Year honors with a state championship in the 1-meter with a score of 240.10. The sophomore standout also finished third in the 3-meter with a 233.75.
Coach Bryan Franzen earned State Diving Coach of the Year honors for the Pirates.
Overall, the OCC men placed fourth with a team score of 388, while the OCC women finished 10th with a team score of 160. Diablo Valley (488) won the men's title, while Santa Rosa (450.5) took home the women's overall title.
