FULLERTON -- The Orange Coast College men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their 2008 seasons on the right foot, so to speak, positing several solid times at the 2008 Cal State Fullerton Season Opener Meet on Aug. 30.
On the women’s side, defending state champion Crystal Reed posted the top time among community college runners, placing fifth overall with a 5K time of 18 minutes, 20.1 seconds. Teammate Cassie Mitchell was second among two-year school runners (25th overall) at 19:13.0. Other times for the Pirate women include Margaret McDuffie (20:03.8), Kimone Hewitt (20:12.9), Janina Emery (20:17.9), Alexandra DeAvila (20:33.6), Joanna Abarca (20:37.5), Andrea Guerra (20:44.2), Meghan Sanchez (20:48.6), Heather Thomas (21:01.8), Heather Cannioto (21:06.9), Hillary LaBelle (21:21.9), Kimberly Valencia (21:34.6), Teri Mitchell (21:39.7), Mishka Hulka (21:59.4), Stephanie Eldridge (22:33.4), Senayt Asrat (22:57.2), Jessica Nevarez (23:20.2), Rachel Plunkett (23:23.7) and Kristi Bergdahl (26:33.8). As a team, OCC posted the best two-year school score of 176. Only Long Beach State (82), Cal Coast (86) and Cal State Los Angeles
(90) fared better.
On the men’s side, OCC again notched the best team score among community college teams with 96, bettered by only Cal State Fullerton (57), Long Beach State (62) and Vanguard University (82). Individually, the Pirates were led by Sergio Olivarrias, who finished ninth overall and tops among two-year schools with an 8K time of 26:51.0. Teammate Raul Torres placed 17th overall and second among two-year runners with a time of 27:11.1. Other solid OCC times were turned in by Russell Westphal (27:40.7), Pedro Saucedo (27:56.7), Luis Gallardo (28:12.6), Kirk Hunter (28:16.6), Bryan Vaughn (28:42.2), Alexis Silvas (28:43.9), Preston Switzer (28:49.0), Weston Hall (28:50.0), Aldo Gordian (28:58.7), Brian Tran (29:00.6), Mason Miller (29:57.3), Alexander Torres (30:21.2), Garrett Fuerte (30:53.0), Santiago Gudino (32:19.6), Stuart Guyot (32:47.9) and Anthony Amaya (33:05.2).
