Women's Water Polo: Pirates cruise to win over Saddleback

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team jumped out early and never looked back en route to a 15-7 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Saddleback on Wednesday.

The Pirates (2-3) outscored the Gauchos 10-2 in the first half and never looked back.

After each team scored to start the contest, OCC answered with five straight, including four in the first 3:16 of the quarter. Amanda Simons scored three in the first, while teammate Jessica Knight added two and Keeley McCormack tossed in one, giving OCC a 6-1 advantage.

In the second it was more of the same as a quick Saddleback goal by Danielle Peeler was answered with a pair of Tasman Backer goals and single tallies by McCormack and Maddison Martin.

The third quarter went back and forth as OCC outscored the Gauchos 3-2 thanks to a pair of Samantha Lane goals and a single goal by Samantha Weisenberg. Saddleback's Whitney Werner and Kimberly Chene found the back of the net for Saddleback.

Goals in the fourth quarter were scored by Knight and Lane for the Pirates, while Peeler, Chene and Adrianna Hogan posted goals for the Gauchos.

The goalie tandem of Patty Channarong and Cassie Zaim combined for eight saves, while Gaucho netminder Amy Bufano and Werner combined for seven saves.

OCC returns to action on Friday and Saturday at the Chaffey College Tournament. The Pirates return home on Sept. 24 for an OEC matchup against Riverside, beginning at 4 p.m.
