COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team opened the home portion of it's 2008 schedule with a convincing 25-11, 25-14, 25-12 nonconference win over visiting Southwestern on Wednesday.
Sophomore Jessica Brown led the Pirates (4-0) with 12 kills, while teammate Rachel Freeno added nine.
Setter Emily Lyon distributed 27 assists, while libero Amanda Cheseborough posted six digs.
For Southwestern (1-6), Brittany McPartland led the way with seven kills.
After starting the season with road wins at Cerritos, Glendale and Citrus, started strong in the opening game on Wednesday, jumping out to a 12-3 lead, thanks in large part to strong serving from the entire team.
Southwestern got as close as 16-9, but the Pirates maintained their comfortable lead and never looked back.
In fact, the Jags' only leads were 1-0 and 2-1 in Game 2 and 1-0 in Game 3. OCC took control the rest of the way. In that second game the 2-1 deficit was answered with a 19-8 run and the Pirates were off and running again.
In the third game, OCC used a 9-1 run early on and a 12-4 run late to close out the match.
The Pirates return to the Peterson Gym on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against the College of Eastern Utah.
