Men's Soccer: Pirates open OEC with 2-1 loss to Santiago Canyon
Tuesday, September 30, 2008

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team opened Orange Empire Conference play with a 2-1 loss to visiting Santiago Canyon on Tuesday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

With the game tied at 1 late in the second half, it looked like the Pirates and Hawks would play to a stalemate, but SCC's Jack Plummer, who scored the game's first goal, scored the game-winner in the 89th minute to seal the win for the guests.

Plummer got the Hawks on the scoreboard first in the 17th minute when he ripped a shot into the upper-right corner for a 1-0 lead.

SCC (2-4-3, 1-0 in conference) had a few great chances to add to its advantage but OCC goalkeeper Jake Muhlstedt (10 saves) came up with big save after big save, keeping the Pirates within striking distance.

The score remained 1-0 for most of the game until the Pirates (4-5-0, 0-1) finally found the back of the net. A nice entry into the zone by Gustavo Ibarra was followed with a touch-pass to Toshi Fujimura and the freshman midfielder controlled the pass, the ripped a shot past Hawks' goalkeeper Alan Orriny (seven saves) to tie the game in the 83rd minute.

Six minutes later, SCC's Anton Jamir fed a pass near the goal that ended up on the foot of Plummer and the Hawks' midfielder didn't miss, burying the shot past Muhlstedt.

The Pirates return to action on Friday at Riverside at 1 p.m. OCC's next home contest will be on Oct. 10 against Golden West, beginning at 3 p.m.
