COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team made a complete sweep of its nonconference schedule with a 25-10, 25-15, 25-12 win over visiting San Diego City on Wednesday at OCC's Peterson Gym.
A trio of Pirates (8-0) -- Jessica Bodkin, Brianna Fields and Rachel Freeno -- each had five kills to lead the offense. Setter Emily Lyon dished out 15 assists, while Freeno was solid on defense with 10 digs.
Sarah Whorley had six kills to lead the Knights (4-2).
It was a night of big runs for the Pirates as they maintained pressure on the visitors all evening long. Leading 11-6 in Game 1, a pair of Bodkin kills and single hits from Freeno and Fields highlighted a 9-0 run, putting the opening game away for OCC.
Midway through Game 2, a 13-4 outburst turned a 7-6 Coast lead into a comfortable 20-10 advantage as the Pirates took a two-game lead.
Game 3 was over in a hurry. Trailing 4-3, OCC used a ton of errant Knight returns and went on a 21-1 run. SDCC actually fought off seven straight match points before Freeno finally ended the contest with her fifth kill of the evening.
The Pirates now turn their attention to the always-tough Orange Empire Conference portion of their schedule. Up first for Coast is Fullerton College (5-2) on Friday at FCC. OCC's first conference home match takes place on Wednesday against Saddleback, beginning at 6 p.m.
