COSTA MESA - Freshman outside hitter Rachel Freeno had 10 kills to lead the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-11, 25-19 win over visiting Saddleback on Wednesday night in Orange Empire Conference action.
Jena Curry and Amanda Cheseborough each anchored the defense with 11 digs, while setter Emily Lyon dished out 28 assists for the Pirates (10-0, 2-0 in conference).
Courtney Farrow had four kills to lead the Gauchos (2-7, 0-2).
With OCC leading 9-7 in Game 1, Freeno (pictured right) helped spark a 10-4 run with back-to-back kills, followed by consecutive service aces. In fact, the Pirates racked up 11 points directly off their serve in the match.
In Game 2, Coast jumped out to a 10-4 lead, then after a three-point Gaucho run, scored eight of the game's next nine points to build a commanding 19-8 advantage. Saddleback got as close as 19-11 before the Pirates ended the game with six straight points.
With many of OCC's reserves in the game, both teams went back and forth with the lead. With the Gauchos up 17-15, Coast used one more run and closed the match with a 10-2 outburst to close things out.
The Pirates return to action on Friday at Cypress, beginning at 6 p.m. Coast's next home match takes place on Wednesday against Irvine Valley, also at 6 p.m.
