COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team made an early goal hold up on Friday as the Pirates topped the Golden West College Rustlers, 1-0, in Orange Empire Conference action at the OCC Soccer Complex.
The Pirates' lone goal came off a corner kick by Julia Borkenhagen. As the ball traveled toward the goal, it popped up straight into the air and teammate Kaleigh Trider headed the ball into the left corner of the goal in the 12th minute.
That's all the Pirates would need as OCC goalkeeper Caitlin Schott preserved the win with six saves.
OCC (6-4-3, 4-2-1 in conference) won its fourth straight decision after starting conference play 0-2-1.
Using a steady head/crosswind the first half, the Pirates set the tone for the afternoon and kept play early and often in the Rustlers' zone. In the second half, GWC had the wind, but Coast's strong play carried over into the final 45 minutes, limiting the Rustlers scoring chances.
OCC returns to action on Tuesday at Irvine Valley at 3 p.m. to conclude the first half of OEC play.
