Cross Country: OCC women win Brubaker Invitational; men place third

ORANGE -- With depth from top to bottom, the Orange Coast College women's cross country team continues to set the pace in 2008, winning the Brubaker Invitational with a team score of 39 points.
OCC's men placed third at the event with a team score of 90, behind San Diego Mesa (40) and San Bernardino Valley (49).
Defending state champion Crystal Reed (pictured right) again crossed the finish line first with a 5K time of 18 minutes, 18.11 seconds, eight seconds ahead of runner-up Christine Cortez of Mt. San Antonio (18:26.58).
All five of OCC's top runners cracked the top-15, including Cassie Mitchell (5th, 18:55.5), Andrea Guerra (9th, 19:24.38), Margaret McDuffee (19:31.75) and Kimone Hewitt (19:33.97).
Other solid Pirate times were turned in by Alexandra DeAvila (19:53.5), Joanna Abarca (19:57.81), Heather Cannioto (20:03.55), Hillary Labelle (20:03.94), Sonya Ercout (20:21.36), Teri Mitchell (20:23.95), Heather Thomas (20:44.67), Mishka Hulka (20:49.17), Meghan Sanchez (20:51.46), Rachel Plunkett (22:32.15) and Stephanie Eldridge (23:13.41).
On the men's side, three OCC runners cracked the top-10, including Russell Westphal, who tackled the four-mile course with a time of 20:48.94. Raul Torres placed 17th with a 21:11.15, while teammate Pedro Saucedo was close behind with a time of 21:11.84.
Weston Hall (34th, 21:32.27) and Alfonso Silvas (39th, 21:44.58) rounded out the top-five for the Pirates.
Other top OCC times include Aldo Gordian (21:49.03), Kirk Hunter (21:53.59), Sergio Olivarrias (21:57.54), Mason Miller (22:00.51), Brian Tran (22:08.04), Alexis Silvas (22:10.14), Garrett Fuerte (22:11.29), Jesus Ramirez (22:26.39), Bryan Vaughn (22:29.85), James Ko (22:46.41), Preston Switzer (23:49.86), Santiago Gudino (24:29.85) and Anthony Amaya (24:31.98).
The Pirates return hit the road again, so to speak, on Friday when they compete at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational, beginning at 4 p.m.
