Friday, October 17, 2008

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team made quick work of visiting Santa Ana, sweeping away the visiting Dons, 25-13, 25-15, 25-9 on Friday in Orange Empire Conference action.

In a night were impressive stats were hard to come by, one career stat stood out above them all. The victory was career win No. 500 for longtime OCC head coach Chuck Cutenese.

Cutenese posted a 234-70 (.832) record with the men's volleyball program from 1993-2006. On the women's side, he has notched 266 wins with 108 losses (.711) over 17 seasons, dating back to 1992. During his tenure as a Pirate player and coach, Cutenese has been a part of four state championships -- one as a player (1987), one as the men's coach (1994) and two as the women's coach (2005 and 2006).

In the win against the Dons, it was another balanced offensive performance for the Pirates (12-1, 4-1 in conference) as Rachel Freeno, Kari-Ann Hyatt, Briana Fields and Jessica Bodkin each posted four kills. Michelle Alvarez anchored the defense with eight digs and Emily Lyon dished out 16 assists.
