Cross Country: Women top field in Santa Barbara, men finish fourth

SANTA BARBARA -- The Orange Coast College women's cross country team continued it's winning ways this past weekend with a first-place team finish at the Santa Barbara City College Cross Country Invitational.
 
With some of the top teams in the state at the event, the Pirates topped the 17-team field with 45 points. Glendale finished second with 54 points, while Cerritos (62), Riverside (69) and College of the Sequoias (145) completed the top-five.
 
Once again, it was sophomore standout Crystal Reed, who set the pace for the entire field, winning the 5K race with a time of 18 minutes, 20 seconds. Glendale's Katie Dunn placed second overall, but was 34 seconds behind the trailblazing Reed with a time of 18:54.
 
The Pirates placed three additional runners in the top-12, including the trio of Andrea Guerra (third, 19:06), Cassie Mitchell (sixth, 19:25) and Kimone Hewitt (12th, 19:48). Freshman Teri Mitchell completed OCC's top-five with a 25th-place time of 20:14.
 
Other top Coast times include Joanna Abarca (20:15), Sonya Ercout (20:21), Alexandra DeAvila (20:23), Heather Cannioto (20:46), Jane Kerner (20:48), Meghan Sanchez (20:51), Kanene Sierra (21:07), Heather Thomas (21:27), Mishka Hulka (21:33), Rachel Plunkett (22:27) and Elena Lopez (25:04).
 
On the men's side, the Pirates placed two in the top-15 and finished fourth overall with 143 points. Riverside took the top spot with 43 points, while Sequoias (77) and El Camino (111) round out the top-three.
 
Luis Gallardo was OCC's top male runner, finishing the four-mile course with a 13th-place time of 22:49, while teammate Raul Torres was close behind, placing 14th at 22:54.
 
Weston Hall (23:24), Kirk Hunter (23:29) and Mason Miller (23:36) complete Coast's top-five, while other quality times were turned in by Alfonso Silvas (23:43), Aldo Gordian (23:47), Alexis Silvas (23:56), Brian Tran (24:04), James Ko (24:08), Garrett Fuerte (24:17), Jesus Pineda (24:56), Bryan Vaughn (25:07), Alex Torres (25:40), Santiago Gudino (26:35) and Anthony Amaya (27:17).
 
The Pirates will be off this upcoming weekend, but will return to their home course at Fairview Park for the Orange Empire Conference championships on Nov. 1, beginning at 9 a.m.
