Men's Soccer: Pirates breeze past Cypress, 7-0
Tuesday, October 21, 2008

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team ended its first round of Orange Empire Conference play with a loud bang after posting a 7-0 win over visiting Cypress College on Tuesday.

Luis Parra had a first-half hat trick for the Pirates (7-6-2, 3-2-2 in conference), while Marco Ramirez added a pair of first-half goals. Single goals were provided by Daniel Lopez and Brian Siemonsma in the second half.

For the second straight game and third time in their last four, the Pirates' defense, led by sophomore Edwardo Garcia (pictured left) kept the opposition off the scoreboard, while goalkeeper Brian Rippeto notched four saves.

The assists were spread around the Coast offense as Kevin Fronk, Scotty Locken, Arturo Vasquez, John Shinjo, Behzad Hashemi and Mitch Williams each provided helpers in the game.

Ramirez gave the Pirates the lead for good in the 22nd when he ripped a penalty kick past diving Chargers' goalkeeper David Cauich (seven saves) for a 1-0 advantage.

From the 28th minute to the 44th minute, it became a scoring clinic for the Pirates as they scored four goals on their next five shots. The missed shot -- that rang off the crossbar and nearly went in.

A nice cross-pass from Fronk found the noggin of Parra and the freshman forward headed his scoring opportunity past Cauich to make it 2-0 in the 28th minute.

Two minutes later, a tip-pass from Locken found the foot of Parra and he slipped a nice shot to the right of Cauich for a 3-0 Coast lead.

Another header finish -- this time by Ramirez from Vasquez -- made it 4-0 in the 42nd minute.

Two minutes later, Shinjo fed a streaking Parra down the middle and he finished off the breakaway for Coast's fifth goal of the half.

In the second half, OCC took its foot off the gas pedal, but still had several solid opportunities. In the 46th minute, a breakaway pass from Hashemi led to a goal by Lopez to make it 6-0.

Finally, in the 84th minute, Siemonsma capped off the scoring off a leading pass from Williams.

With the loss, Cypress fell to 0-12-3, 0-6-1.

OCC returns to action on Friday at Santiago Canyon, beginning at 3 p.m. The Pirates' next home game will be on Tuesday against Riverside, also at 3 p.m.
