COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team put its modest two-game winless streak to bed on Friday with a 2-1 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Saddleback on Friday afternoon.
The Pirates (8-6-5, 6-4-3 in conference) jumped out to the early advantage in the 16th minute when a long shot was saved by Saddleback goalkeeper Kat Pegg (four saves). However, the ball squirted free and sophomore forward Beth Krikorian placed a nice sharp-angle shot into the back of the net.
The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the half and in the 70th minute, OCC padded its lead when a pass from Lara Tishler reached teammate Brianna Vanderwal and the sophomore ripped a shot past Pegg into the net for a 2-0 Pirates' advantage.
Things got a bit interesting in the 80th minute when Saddleback's Jericho Baichtal found the back of the net with a shot, cutting OCC's lead to 2-1.
But the Pirates' defense would keep the Gauchos off the scoreboard the rest of the way to preserve the win.
OCC returns to action on Friday at Fullerton College, beginning at 3 p.m. After another road matchup at Golden West on Nov. 11 (6 p.m.), the Pirates wrap up the regular season at home against Irvine Valley on Nov. 14, beginning at 3 p.m.
