Women's Volleyball: Pirates hang tough, but fall to Lasers in five

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball gave first-place Irvine Valley all it could handle on Friday night, but the visiting Pirates fell in five games to the Lasers, 21-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-27, 15-6, in Orange Empire Conference action.
Freshman Rachel Freeno led the Pirates (15-4, 7-4 in conference) with 16 kills and 14 digs. Briana Fields added 15 kills, Christina Richards contributed 13 and Jessica Bodkin added 10.
Defensively, freshman libero Amanda Cheseborough came up with 22 digs, while sophomore teammate Jena Curry added 20.
Sophomore setter Emily Lyon dished out 59 assists.
Nichole May (21 kills), Mari Guadagnini (15 kills), Casey Williams (15 kills) led the way for the first-place Lasers (14-4, 10-1).
OCC returns to action on Wednesday at Santa Ana (7 p.m.) before returning home for its regular season home finale against rival Golden West on Friday at 7 p.m.
