Men's Basketball: Pirates drop opening pair in Ventura
Monday, November 10, 2008

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team lost its opening two games at the 2008 We Play Hard Tip-Off Tournament, held at Ventura College last weekend.

The Pirates opened the season with last year's state runner-up Bakersfield College and despite a close first half, Coast was unable to finish things off and lost 103-81.

Martin Whitmore led the Pirates with 16 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Brian Helmuth added 14 points and eight boards. Chris Curtis and Marcus Hairston each chipped in 10 points.

On Saturday, the Pirates wrapped up their tournament action with a 69-53 loss to Mt. San Antonio. It was a cold night from the 3-point arc as well as the free-throw line for OCC as the Pirates shot 1-of-18 from downtown and 10-of-22 from the charity stripe.

Helmuth, a sophomore forward from Trabuco Hills High School, was the team's lone double-digit scorer with 14 points and six rebounds.

OCC will kick off its home schedule on Wednesday night against L.A. Harbor, beginning at 5 p.m.
