KICKING OFF: The Orange Coast College football team wraps up its 2008 football season at home against the Long Beach City College Vikings. The Pirates lead the overall series 12-9-0 and have won the last three meetings with the Vikings, including last year’s 20-14 victory.
MORE FOOTBALL AT COAST: Tonight’s game may be the Pirates’ finale, but there still will be plenty of community college football to be played at LeBard Stadium in the upcoming weeks. OCC’s home field will be the site of the 2008 Orange County Bowl, set for Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. Fullerton and Citrus colleges played in last year’s OC Bowl with a 34-24 win over the Owls. Following that contest, LeBard Stadium will be the site for the 2008 CCCAA State Football Championship, set for Saturday, Dec. 13 at 5 p.m. If you haven’t gotten your football fix just yet, come out to LeBard Stadium for some exciting football!
HIGH OCTANE OFFENSES: Expect the scoreboard operator to be rather busy tonight with these two teams. With the combination of two effective offenses and two struggling defenses, both teams will look for some big numbers when they have the ball. Both teams are averaging just over 24 points per game. OCC quarterback Taylor Hughes returns to the lineup after sitting out last week with a shoulder injury. Hughes needs 267 yards to surpass the 2,000-yard passing mark this season. If he succeeds, he’ll be just the fourth OCC QB to reach the 2,000-yard mark, joining Keith Jarrett (2,524 in 1987), Jared Flint (2,458 in 1999) and Nick Higgs (2,073 in 2000).
FOR THE VIKINGS: Much like the Pirates, the Vikings’ offense has been largely successful through the arm of quarterback Josh Powell, who has amassed 2,006 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. His two favorite targets this year have been Brandon Joseph (49 receptions, 552 yards, four touchdowns) and Stephen Burton (31-575-6). On the ground, look for Darren Tubbs (122 carries, 518 yards, seven touchdowns) to garner the most attention.
DELEONE … THANKS! Tonight wraps up the career of several OCC players, including standout defensive end Dean DeLeone. Heading into tonight’s game, DeLeone has racked up 145 tackles, 29 tackles for a loss, 12 sacks and one impressive 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. One of the premier defenders in Southern California for two seasons, OCC wishes DeLeone -- and the rest of the sophomore class -- nothing but the best in the future!
