COSTA MESA -- In one of the longest games in school history, the Orange Coast College women's basketball team finally pulled off an 85-79 win in three overtimes against visiting San Bernardino Valley at the 2008 Orange Coast Crossover on Saturday.
The last time OCC went into three-or-more OTs was a five-OT win over Fullerton College back on Jan. 25, 2006.
Simone Ibbotson led the Pirates (6-1) with 29 points, while Casey Gomez added 22 points, four rebounds and six assists. Freshman Jenna Lujan posted her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Eisha Sheppard led the Wolverines (3-5) with 25 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Angela Green added 14 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks.
OCC looked to have the game won in the second overtime, leading 74-70 with 55 seconds left, but a basket by Tracianne Patterson (17 points) cut the lead to two. After OCC failed to score on its next possession, Sheppard cut down the middle on an inbounds pass with four seconds left and made the layup, sending the game into a third OT.
In that final five-minute frame, a pair of treys from Ibbotson and Gomez helped give the Pirates an 80-77 lead with 3:20 left.
SBVC got to within one with 1:40 left, but OCC closed things out with a 3-pointer and two made free throws from Ibbotson and another made shot from the charity stripe from Daisy Bueno. Ibbotson finished with 10 of her 29 points in the overtime periods.
OCC returns to action on Thursday at the Cuesta Tournament against Citrus, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Pirates' next home game will be on Friday, Dec. 12 against Cerritos, beginning at 7 p.m.
