PASADENA -- It's "must-win" time from here on out for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team after a shocking first day of action at the CCCAA Women's Volleyball State Championships, held at Pasadena City College.
The Pirates stumbled out of the gates in the opener, dropping a five-game heartbreaker to Fresno City College, 11-25, 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 15-10, but stayed alive in the tournament with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-12 sweep over Feather River in the nightcap.
With the win, OCC moves on in the tournament and will play the loser of the Sacramento City vs. Santa Rosa matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m. at PCC.
It was a shocking day for the Southland as three of the four teams from the usually-dominant region fell in opening-round matches, including OEC champion Irvine Valley and favorite El Camino.
In the loss to the Rams, OCC cruised in Game 1, but lost Games 2 and 3 to fall behind in the match.
Behind the strong play of Briana Fields (19 kills, seven in Game 4 alone), the Pirates (21-5) evened the match, 25-22 and led 7-3 in Game 5, but were outscored 12-3 to close the match out.
Karlee Skalla added nine kills, four aces, three blocks and eight digs, while Rachel Freeno contributed nine kills and 12 digs against Fresno City.
