Women's Basketball: Pirates win consolation title at Cuesta Tournament

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- After a tough loss to Citrus (51-42), the Orange Coast College women's basketball team responded with back-to-back wins over Allan Hancock (77-51) and Barstow (72-43) at the 25th Annual Conoco/Phillips Basketball Tournament, played at Cuesta College.
 
The Pirates came out ice-cold against the Owls in the tourney opener, scoring just 16 first-half points on 6-of-19 shooting (0-for-6 from 3-point range). OCC went 1-for-14 from beyond the 3-point arc and no player reached double figures in scoring.
 
In the win over AHC, the Pirates used 23 Bulldog turnovers and turned several into easy baskets en route to the win. Simone Ibbotson led the Pirates with 15 points, while Natasha Cargill added 11.
 
On Sunday, the Pirates had their best field-goal percentage of the weekend, hitting 27 of 49 shots for 55 percent. On defense, OCC held the Vikings to just 18 first-half points.
 
Jenna Lujan scored 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team. Samantha Harrell added 11 points and five rebounds, while Ibbotson added nine points and seven boards.
 
OCC returns to action on Friday at home against Cerritos at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at home against Ventura at 1 p.m.
