LOS ANGELES -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team split a pair of games at the Intensity Classic last weekend, topping host L.A. Southwest College, 77-71, on Friday, before falling to El Camino, 75-67, on Saturday.
In Friday's win, Martin Whitmore led the Pirates with 20 points and three steals, while Chad Delaney and Brian Helmuth each tossed in 14 points.
With the game tied at 35 at the half, OCC took the lead, then held on to that lead with some solid free-throw shooting down the stretch, hitting 14-of-18 in the second half. In addition, Coast shot 50 percent from the floor (14-for-28) in the second half.
On Saturday, OCC struggled to find its shooting touch in the first half, hitting just 10 of 31 shots from the field (1-of-15 from 3-point range).
Whitmore again led the way with 15 points, while Eric Williams added 13 points and Marcus Hairston chipped in 10.
OCC returns to action on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Glendale Tournament against College of the Canyons. The Pirates will be back in the Peterson Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 14 against Saddleback College, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
