Women's Basketball: Pirates open Coast Christmas Classic with win

COSTA MESA -- Simone Ibbotson had 14 points and three blocks, while Casey Gomez and Daisy Bueno each added 11 to lead the Orange Coast College women's basketball team to a 65-53 win over Southwestern in the opening round of the 2008 Coast Christmas Classic.

Jenna Lujan and Chelsea Alfafara each chipped in eight points for the Pirates (10-4), while the boards were controlled by the trio of Rebecca Murray (11 rebounds), Jaque Anderson (seven rebounds) and Samantha Harrell (seven rebounds).

Tagisia Togisala had 16 points to lead Southwestern (3-6).

There was nothing "free" about the free-throw line for either team in this game. OCC shot a chilly 13-of-27 from the charity stripe, but that was Larry Bird-esque compared to the Jags, who shot 4-of-22 from the line. They snapped an 0-for-16 run with a 4-6 flourish from the stripe to end the game.

Chaffey 58, El Camino 38 -- Aundria Anderson had 11 points to lead the Panthers (12-3) past the Warriors in the tournament opener. Arione Nabors added eight points and a team-best 10 rebounds. Carla Shaw led the Warriors (4-9) with nine points.

College of the Canyons 83, Saddleback 64 -- Ashley Wakefield had the high game for Day 1 of the tournament with 28 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Cougars (9-4) past the Gauchos (5-6). Saddleback's Keisha Cox also lit up the scoreboard with 26 points.

Cerritos 76, Cuesta 31 -- A 50 percent shooting night for the Falcons was too much for the Cougars (4-11) to overcome. Maleta Daughtery led Cerritos (7-7) with 26 points, while Vanessa Faagata added 14. For Cuesta, Valerie Gee led the way with eight points as the Cougars struggled from the field, hitting just 11 of 61 shots for the game (18 percent).
