Men's Basketball: Second-half surge lifts Pirates past Lasers

IRVINE -- An impressive shooting night from Martin Whitmore helped the Orange Coast College men's basketball team open its Orange Empire Conference schedule on a winning note.
Whitmore's 27 points (10-of-15 shooting), eight rebounds and six steals helped the visiting Pirates topple Irvine Valley, 86-83 on Friday night.
OCC (8-12, 1-0 in conference), which trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, trimmed the deficit to seven at the half and outscored the Lasers 45-35 in the second half for the win.
Three other Pirate players reached double figures, including Chris Curtis (19 points), Marcus Hairston (13 points) and Eric Williams (13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists).
Brandon Hucks led the Lasers (10-11, 0-2) with 19 points and six rebounds.
OCC returns to the Peterson Gym for the first time since Dec. 10 on Wednesday against Saddleback, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
