Men's Basketball: Whitmore, Hellmuth lead Pirates past Santa Ana

COSTA MESA -- In a game that saw 11 lead changes, the 11th and final advantage went to the Orange Coast College men's basketball team as the Pirates held on for a 68-65 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Santa Ana on Wednesday.
Martin Whitmore led the Pirates (9-16, 2-4 in conference) with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Brian Helmuth came off of the bench to score 13 points and grab six rebounds. Chad Delaney and Chris each added 12 for Coast, while Eric Williams added seven points and five assists.
Santa Ana (11-12, 1-5) was led by Tyler Averill (15 points), D'Andre Denan (14), Ian Parks (13) and Levar Gamble (11 points, 11 rebounds).
With the game going back and forth, the turning point came with 3:15 left in the game. With OCC holding onto a 59-57 lead, back-to-back jumpers by Delaney and Whitmore pushed the Pirates' advantage to 63-57, a lead they would not lose the rest of the way.
With the score 68-65, Santa Ana had one final opportunity to tie the game, but the Dons missed on their 3-point try in the game's final seconds.
OCC opens the second half of OEC play at home on Wednesday, Feb. 4 against Irvine Valley, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
