SAN LUIS OBISPO -- An early avalanche of runs was too much to overcome for the Orange Coast College baseball team in Friday's 12-3 nonconference loss to Cuesta College.
The Pirates (2-1) watched the Cougars (2-2) score three runs in the first inning, three in the second and four in the third on seven hits, four walks, two HBP and three Coast errors and the rout was on.
The early deficit allowed head coach John Altobelli to bring in some players for some first-time collegiate experience and the reserves managed to keep the Cougars at bay the rest of the way.
Gary Detwiler slugged a solo home run in his first at-bat of the season and Kris Martin went 2-for-3 with a run scored in his first start of the season in right field. Ryan Sheeks added an RBI double and Corey Schultz drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
But that was all that Cuesta starter Mike Nielebeck allowed, throwing a complete-game six-hitter, walking three and striking out six.
Coast relievers Matt Alfaro, Andrew Sharp and Josh Lee combined for six innings of solid relief, allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits.
OCC and Cuesta will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday, beginning at noon.
