Baseball: Pirates drop third straight
Wednesday, February 04, 2009

LONG BEACH -- Another episode of sloppy defense and roughed up pitching did in the Orange Coast College baseball team in Wednesday's 11-3 nonconference loss to Long Beach City College.

OCC (2-3) fell behind 6-0 early as starter Chris Licon was roughed up for six runs (four earned) on eight hits over three innings of work. The Pirates' defense was no help to their pitching staff as seven errors led to five unearned runs.

Coast's best chance to get back into the game came in the fifth inning. Trailing 6-0, three straight two-out singles by D.J. Arellano, Ryan Sheeks and Ryan Dunn loaded the bases for the Pirates' RBI hitters. Drew Hillman walked, bringing in Arellano, but designated hitter Scott Stidham grounded into a fielder's choice leaving the bases loaded.

An RBI walk by Kris Martin and an RBI fielder's choice by Alonzo Torres produced OCC two runs in the eighth, but it was too little, too late.

The Pirates and Vikings continue their three-game series at LBCC on Friday at 2 p.m. If the game is rained out, the two teams will play a doubleheader at OCC on Saturday.
