COSTA MESA -- There are plenty of question marks after six games, but one thing is certain about the Orange Coast College baseball team -- the Pirates are not peaking too soon. On Tuesday, the Pirates came up on the wrong end of a 12-1 nonconference loss to visiting Southwestern College, giving Coast its fourth straight defeat after starting the season 2-0. It was another head-scratching effort for the Pirates as the Jaguars (6-0) used eight walks, two hit batters and three OCC errors to their advantage. The big blow came in the top of the fifth. Already leading 3-1, back-to-back doubles made things 4-1 before a pair of walks loaded the bases for Travis Taijeron. The sophomore rightfielder lined a shot over the left-field wall for a grand slam, putting the game away, 8-1. While the Jags were scoring in bunches, the Pirates' bats were silenced by a five-pack of pitchers. Starter Eric Krause picked up the win on pitcher-by-committee day, holding the Pirates to just two hits with a pair of strikeouts over three innings of work. Alonzo Torres was the lone OCC player with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot. Coast picked up its lone run in the fourth when Kris Martin led off with a walk, went to second on a bloop single by Drew Hillman and scored on an RBI single by Brett Wallach. The Pirates return to action on Wednesday at home against Palomar, beginning at 2 p.m.
