MISSION VIEJO -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team nearly came all the way back from a late double-digit deficit, but fell just short to Saddleback College, 79-78, on Friday night.
Trailing by 11 with less than three minutes left to play, the Pirates (9-18, 2-6 in Orange Empire Conference) put on a furious comeback and got to within a single point, capped off by a Chris Curtis 3-pointer with 5.9 seconds left.
Saddleback (22-6, 7-1) was fouled immediately and after both free throws were missed, the Pirates had a chance to steal the game, but Coast's desperation shot at the buzzer was blocked to end the game.
Curtis and Eric Williams each had 18 points in the loss for OCC, while Martin Whitmore added 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Saddleback was led by Franklin Session's 22 points, while Kevin Menner added 21 points.
OCC hosts Cypress College on Wednesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
