SAN DIEGO -- Fourteen runs, 11 hits including a double and two triples, five walks, streaks of seven, then eight consecutive batters reaching base ...
All in all, a very productive FIFTH INNING, for the Orange Coast College baseball team in Thursday's 17-9 nonconference win over San Diego City.
After four games of struggling at the plate, the Pirates (4-4) erupted all over the Morley Field complex in the fifth, quickly turning a 3-0 deficit into a 14-3 laugher.
Beck Wheeler -- who batted three times in the fifth inning -- opened and closed the frame, but not without plenty of fireworks along the way.
Kevin Clark and D.J. Arellano each had two hits and three RBI, while Ryan Sheeks added a two-run double and Mykal Stokes added two hits -- all in the fifth inning.
For the record, the Pirates still were far short of the school's all-time record for runs in an inning, 20, set back in 1957 against Chaffey College.
Stokes and Arellano each had three hits and the two combined for five runs and five RBI for OCC. Sheeks went 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Clark added two hits, three runs and three RBI from the DH slot.
OCC starter Calvin Drummond took advantage of the run barrage and pitched six effective innings to pick up the win. He allowed five runs (four earned) with only one walk and nine strikeouts.
The Pirates return to action on Friday at noon at Southwestern College.
