COSTA MESA -- In a cozy 2 hours, 3 minutes, the Orange Coast College baseball team topped College of the Desert, 9-4, in the opening game of a three-game set with the Roadrunners on Thursday at OCC's Wendell Pickens Field.
Mykal Stokes went 2-for-3, including a three-run home run, scored twice and drove in four runs for the Pirates (6-5) while teammate Drew Hillman added three hits (two doubles and a triple) and scored twice.
Sophomore righty Brett Wallach improved to 1-1 with a solid seven-inning performance, allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. He also went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI at the plate.
After falling behind to COD 2-0 in the top of the fourth, OCC relied on some two-out magic to take the lead for good. Six straight batters reached with two outs in the bottom of the fourth (four singles, a three-run home run by Stokes and a hit-by-pitch) to ignite the offense.
After the Roadrunners (2-9) made it 4-3 in the top of the fifth, Coast answered right back in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff double by Hillman was followed by an RBI double by Scott Stidham and after a Wallach single made it first and third, Mykal Stokes drove in Stidham with a sacrifice fly to right, giving OCC a 6-3 advantage.
Jason Van Hoon's second sacrifice fly of the game made it 6-4 in the top of the seventh, but OCC added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff triple by Stokes was followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Ryan Sheeks and Ryan Dunn. After Dunn's single got away from the COD centerfielder, the sophomore shortstop raced all around the bases to close out the scoring.
Naoya Washiya went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run for COD. Austin Hanyal tossed a complete game, but took the loss and fell to 0-3.
Game 2 of this weekend's three-game series with the Roadrunners continues on Friday at 2 p.m. at OCC. The finale will take place on Saturday at Coast, beginning at noon.
