Women's Tennis: Pirates blank Lasers in OEC opener

COSTA MESA -- Led by the strong play of No. 1 singles standout Brittany Bass, the Orange Coast College women's tennis team opened Orange Empire Conference play with a 9-0 shutout win over visiting Irvine Valley on Thursday.
Bass made quick work of her singles' opponent, Maya Morris of IVC with a 6-0, 6-0 win. From there, she partnered up with Melissa Boyer and took care of the team of Morris and Emily Davies, 8-4 in doubles. The marathon match of the day came at No. 5 singles when OCC's Hannah Mancino outlasted IVC's Lindsay Baecker, 6-2, 6-7 (10-8), 7-5. Other straight-set wins came from Boyer (6-0, 6-3), Nicole Naughton (6-1, 6-3), Kalin Eshelman (6-2, 6-1) and Heather Wong (6-0, 6-0). In doubles, Eshelman and Mancino (8-3) and Naughton and Julia Garofalo (8-2) also cruised to victory. OCC returns to action on Tuesday at home against Riverside, beginning at 2 p.m.
