Swimming: Pirates atop the mountain at Mt. SAC Invitational

WALNUT -- The Orange Coast College men's and women's swim teams stood tall against some of the top swimmers in the area at the 2009 Mt. San Antonio Invitational.
On the men's side, the Pirates lapped the field with 983 points. Ventura placed a distant second with 490 points.
On the women's side, the OCC Pirates edged out the Ventura Pirates, 876-843 with San Diego Mesa (468) third.
Freestyle specialist Riki Yano showed his versatility by winning the 50-yard freestyle (21.35 seconds), the 500 free (4 minutes, 38.56 seconds) and the 650 free (16:25.43).
Teammate Andrew Choi claimed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke (59.49) as well as the 200 individual medley (1:56.95) and placed second in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.15).
In the medley events, the Pirates placed first in the 200 free (1:25.0), 400 free (3:11.0), the 800 free (7:13.0) and the 400 medley (3.38.0).
Other top-three performances for the Pirate men include Daren Brubaker in the 50 free (2nd, 21.73) and the 100 backstroke (3rd, 54.97), Eric Crimson in the 50 free (3rd, 22.12), the 100 free (3rd, 48.23) and the 200 free (2nd, 1:47.7), Sam Edman in the 500 free (2nd, 5:00.29), Chris Bernard in the 400 IM (3rd, 4:31.31), Chris Salgado in 3-meter diving (2nd, 401.50 points), Jonathan Franzen in 3-meter diving (398.65), the 200 free relay (3rd, 1:29.0) and the 200 medley relay (2nd, 1:38.0).
On the women's side, it was a busy day for standout Michelle Kirkpatrick. The freshman standout posted three first-place finishes, one second and one third. She hit the wall first in the 200 IM (2:15.64), the 100 breaststroke (1:10.45) and the 100 IM (1:01.73) with a runner-up spot in the 50 breaststroke (31.85) and a third-place time in the 100 backstroke (1:03.08).
Another full performance came from teammate Danielle Lavery, who won the 200 free (1:58.34) and finished second in the 100 free (55.25), the 50 butterfly (27.92) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.06) and placed third in the 100 IM (1:03.28).
Natalie Bell topped Lavery in the 50 fly (27.76), but finished third, behind her teammate in the 100 fly (1:02.55).
Another first-place performance came in the 500 free, where Maddison Martin hit the wall first with a time of 5:15.02. In 3-meter diving, freshman Mishka Hulka topped the field with 309.25 points.
In the relay events, OCC placed first in the 800 free (8:09.0) and 200 free (1:41.0), second in the 200 medley (1:56.0) and the 400 medley (4:10.0) and third in the 400 free (3:45.0).
Other top-three performances came from Lindsay Ronce in the 50 back (3rd, 30.14), Amy White in the 400 IM (3rd, 532.75) and Jamie Krispel in the 100 breaststroke (2nd, 1:10.92).
