SANTA ANA -- The Orange Coast College softball team continues to show signs of improvement, but after a doubleheader sweep of Taft on Saturday, the Pirates returned to Orange Empire Conference play and fell to Santa Ana, 5-3, on Wednesday.
Katrina Gaar had a pair of hits and a run scored for the Pirates (3-6 overall, 0-5 in OEC), while Candice Arevalo added a hit and an RBI. Kalyn Lee, Madelyn Page and Kristin Bassler each added hits and Bassler and Kayse Potter each scored runs for OCC.
Trailing 2-1 after four innings, OCC regained the lead in the top of the fifth when a walk and three Santa Ana College errors helped plate a pair of runs for the Pirates.
But SAC (4-5-1, 1-3) answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth.
In the seventh, OCC had runners on first and second with nobody out, courtesy of back-to-back singles by Bassler and Gaar. But Dons reliever Kaitlyn Harp managed to work through the heart of the Coast offense and didn't allow a run the rest of the way.
The Pirates return to action on Friday at home against Santiago Canyon, beginning at 2 p.m.
