Track and Field: Pirates post strong effort at Cerritos Invitational

CERRITOS -- The Orange Coast College men's and women's track teams competed with some of the top athletes in Southern California at the Cerritos Invitational this past weekend and the Pirates put forth some impressive performances.
 
On the women's side, it was a sea of orange in the 800-meter run as the foursome of Cassie Mitchell (2nd, 2 minutes, 20.79 seconds), Kimone Hewitt (3rd, 2:20.85), Margaret McDuffee (6th, 2:26.18) and Teri Mitchell (8th, 2:26.74) all finished in the top-10.
 
It was more of the same for the Pirates in 1,500 as Mitchell placed third with a time of 4:44.83, with McDuffee (4:53.46) placing fourth and Kristen Simek (4:54.88) taking sixth.
 
In the 400 intermediate hurdles, Brianna Vanderwal placed fifth overall with a time of 1:07.42, while teammate Kathryn Karkut was right behind her in sixth with a 1:09.11.
 
It was a busy day for Vanderwal as she also placed fifth in the javelin throw (105 feet, 6 inches) and 10th in the 100 high hurdles (16.93).
 
Other top-10 performances for the Pirate women include Heather Cannioto in the 5,000 (9th, 19:32.33), Hillary LaBelle in the 5,000 (10th, 19:32.62), Danielle Morton in the javelin (9th, 96-4), Jade LeBlanc in the pole vault (6th, 9-6) and Jacquelynn Swank and Jessica Clees in the pole vault (9th, 9-0 each).
 
On the men's side, a trio of Pirates each notched a pair of top-10 performances, led by Sergio Olivarrias in the 800 (4th, 1:56.91) and the 1,500 (5th, 4:06.63).
 
Sprinter Elijah Landry-Zapien placed fourth in the 100 (11.12) and seventh in the 200 (22.53), while thrower Stephan Ruby notched a third-place mark in the javelin (170-11) and a 10th-place mark in the shot put (43-11 1/2).
 
Other top-10 results for the Pirates include Alex Whiston in the 400 (7th, 50.21), Justin Rovin in the 400 hurdles (6th, 55.79), Kirk Hunter in the 3,000 steeplechase (7th, 10:23.94), Caleb Monticalvo in the pole vault (8th, 14-0) and the OCC 400 relay team (6th, 43.22).

The Pirates will return to action on Friday in a dual meet with rival Golden West, set for 2 p.m. at OCC.
